Boat length Mesurments

Boat length

When you talk about what size your boat is there are a few different ways describing it. There is LOA or length over all and that is the above water length including the bow sprit of a sailboat and the length of a boom that extends past the stern of a sailboat or past the motor if it has an outboard on it for motor boats. This is the length a marina will want and charge you for when you dock. This is the maximum length of the boat.

The LWL is the length from bow to stern at the waterline. This is the measurement for figuring hull speeds and such. These two lengths can be a few feet different.
