I Dusted Off My Bike

I Dusted Off My Bike

I was a little inspired after my last blog and decided to get my bike out. The bike is still in good condition for an old ten speed. It was a good bike when I bought it and I had planned to use it to go back and forth to work. That was a short lived idea back then when I found there was no place I could park the bike when I got to work. My boss let me bring it inside the first day I rode it, but said I could not do it again.

I noticed there was a little rust on some of the spokes and it was very dusty but all in all it was not in bad shape. I pumped up the tires and was pleased they both held air. I lubricated the chain, tested the brakes and gave the bike a good once over check. I got thinking about it…the bike was about 18 years old. I think it has aged better than I have.

I checked out to see if anyone was around before I got on the bike to try it out. I did not want anyone to see me fall off it. 😎 I found it was a little harder to get my leg over the bike than I remembered it to be, and the bike seat was much harder than I remembered it. The bike seat must have petrified over the years. A new seat should not cost too much.

I had no balance problems and the bike rode nice. I checked to see what gear set I was in and it was one of mid-range.  I figured that would be a good place to leave it. I would try shifting gears next time out. It felt nice to ride down the street. The streets are paved, and only a modest grade on a few of them. I did a slow easy ride. I got to the far side of the subdivision and headed back. I was not surprised that I could feel my legs getting tired…not the type of exercise I have done for a long time. I did not want to overdo it the first time out.  I did about a mile ride by the time I got back to the house. I know that was more than enough for the first time out…after all I am much older than the bike is. 😎

I will need to clean up the bike a little better but that can be done a little each time I take it out. Now I just need to keep up with it.
